Top Tips to Deal with Toxic People Effectively

At one point or other in your life, you come across a person who leaves you feeling manipulated or degraded after interacting with them. Such people exhibit toxic traits, which lead you to feel worse, unwanted, or unsupported in their presence.  Maybe you are not aware of the negative impact they can have on you but if you pay attention, you will find out how they affect your mental health.

If you have been struggling to deal with a toxic person that you have known all your life, this article is for you! We have put together some useful tips to help you deal with them effectively.

Try Identifying the Toxic People Around You

Maybe you are surrounded by people who leave you emotionally drained whenever you interact with them. Their behavior is so irrational that it drives you crazy. And the irony is, you fail to identify their toxic traits. You may have a lot of toxic friends and family members and don’t even realize it.

The very first step towards desensitizing yourself from their abusive behavior, words and actions, is to look for the basic signs of toxicity in them. There are different types of toxic people but every person exhibits some specific toxic traits. If you familiarize yourself with these traits, it will be easier for you to recognize toxic people around you. Here is a list of the most common toxic traits:

  • Toxic people are very controlling and manipulative. They tend to influence people to do what they want.
  • They are super-narcissist. On top of that, they are quite selfish because of their sense of entitlement.
  • They never apologize. Even if they do something wrong or hurt anyone’s feelings, they just don’t admit their mistakes.

Distance Yourself from Toxic People

If you have a friend, who is very self-centered and tries their best to assert their dominance over you, then you should consider distancing yourself from them. Chances are, you tried setting boundaries with them but you still suffered because of their attitude.

In case, they still cross those boundaries, then try communicating your boundaries to them. Make sure you stay calm yet assertive while making your expectations clear.

If nothing seems to help, then you should ask yourself, “Do I deserve to be treated this way?” or “Do I really need this person in my life?”.

If you have had enough of such people, consider leaving them behind. When you decide to cut off such people from your life, you are able to give yourself some much-needed breathing room.

Distancing yourself from toxic people and moving on with your life does not necessarily mean that you wish them any harm or hate everything about them. It simply means that you prioritize your mental well-being over everything else.

Take Some Time for Yourself

At times, we have no choice but to delete a toxic person from our environment. Whether you are working with a toxic person on a project or you are living with them, it is hard to avoid them. What you can do in this situation is to allow yourself to take a break from such people.

When you get some alone time to unwind, you will be able to get rid of their coercive and controlling attitude for a while. You don’t necessarily have to be a rational and focused individual at all times. It’s okay to give yourself some much-needed ‘me time’ and take a break from the toxic environment. You can utilize this free time to catch your favorite movie or TV shows on Cox TV. When you do so, you would automatically start feeling better.

Learn to Say ‘No’

As strange as it sounds, some people find it extremely hard to say no to others. It’s primarily because they want to go out of their way to help their loved ones so they have a hard time turning people down.

At times, people who say ‘no’ are guilt-tripped by others so they end up agreeing to things that they are not even comfortable with. If you don’t want to indulge in a boring or stressful activity, just say ‘no’ without any second thoughts. Once you do so, don’t even think of backing down. You may find it challenging at first but you will eventually get used to it. The key is to not feel guilty. There is really no place for guilt here.

The EndNote

Some people may think that they can live a peaceful life by eliminating toxic people from their life. If you are one of those people, then you are mistaken. Instead of removing toxic people from your life, you should learn how to deal with them. Once you know how to successfully deal with such people, you will be able to lead a positive and happy life.
